Three eras, briefly
In the first, repeating a phrase enough times was a strategy. In the second, links became the currency and an industry grew up around acquiring them. In the third — the one we are in — engines model what the searcher meant, and reward the page that resolves it.
The reliable strategy has not changed in fifteen years: be the most useful answer to a question people are actually asking.
What still moves the needle
- Pages built around a real question, not a keyword.
- Fast, mobile-first delivery — speed is a ranking input and a conversion one.
- Clean structure: proper headings, descriptive links, schema markup.
- Local signals — a complete business profile matters enormously in Nigeria.
- Content that gets updated rather than published and abandoned.
Where it is heading
As AI-generated summaries take more of the results page, being cited becomes as valuable as being clicked. That rewards specificity, original data and clear structure — and penalises pages assembled from what everyone else already wrote.
